Local Fixture

A fixture is a thing that is fixed in place. It belongs to the building rather than to the person who put it there, and the test of one is simple: if you sold the shop tomorrow, it would stay.

Local Fixture is a general store in Uptown Whittier, on the southeast side of Los Angeles County. Specialty goods, fine gifts, wellness, and a coffee bar. And our booth has been in it long enough now that it passes the test the shop is named after.

The plant and the doormat

Look at the first photo and find the two things we did not supply.

There is a plant on the roof of our booth. A ZZ plant, in a ceramic pot, sitting on the top rail next to the marquee. And there is a coir doormat on the floor at the entrance, the shop's own, reading HAPPY HOUSE.

Neither is ours. Both were put there by Local Fixture.

That is the single best thing that can happen to a Venue Placement, and it is worth more than any argument we could make on this page. A venue does not decorate a machine. A venue decorates its own furniture. Somewhere between the install day and the day these photos were taken, the shop stopped seeing a photo booth in the corner and started seeing a surface that needed a plant on it and a threshold that needed a mat.

You cannot design that outcome. You can only make an object that does not resist it.

What we built

The room is white painted brick, dark mottled concrete, rails of black, white and cream clothing, and a lot of live green.

So the booth is woodgrain in a brushed metal frame, with a teal velvet curtain on grommet rings. Dark wood against the floor, teal against the plants. Not one color in it is doing anything the room was not already doing.

The marquee is the exception and it is the only bright thing on the cabinet. A tall white lightbox running most of the height of the front face, lit from behind, carrying Local Fixture in their own script and serif lockup. In a shop with a lot of small lovely objects competing for your eye at waist height, a lit panel at head height is the one signal that does not have to compete.

Inside, a bench, a white back wall, and a black grid floor plate with MAJESTIC set into it. Print slot in an aluminum bezel on the lower front panel. Leveling feet on a floor that is genuinely not flat.

Underneath is our Classic booth, specified to the room rather than chosen from a page of options. This is not a ground up build, and it did not need to be. What it needed was a palette pulled out of the room it was going into, and a marquee bright enough to find.

The strip

Black and white portraits. Local Fixture at the top in the script, Whittier, CA at the bottom.

The city on the strip is the part we would argue for hardest if a client ever pushed back on it.

A photo strip leaves the building. It goes in a wallet, on a fridge, into a shoebox, and it gets looked at years later by somebody who was not there. Everything else on a booth is for the moment. The two words at the bottom of the card are the only part doing a job in five years, and they are the reason a strip is a better souvenir than a story.

Why this is a placement rather than a booking

Worth spelling out, since this is exactly the case our Venue Placement program exists for.

Local Fixture did not buy a photo booth. There was no capital, no hardware on their books, and nobody behind the counter has to think about paper, ribbon or a jammed print. We designed it with them, they approved the direction before anything went into production, we installed it, and we run it. Monitoring, maintenance and service sit with us.

They give it floor space, power and a good spot. It earns more for the shop the better it performs.

And it came with ninety days to prove it belonged. That is our Earn Its Space Guarantee: if a placement has not demonstrated the value we agreed, we optimize it, move it, or take it out. We would rather remove a booth than defend a bad one.

Given the plant, we do not think anybody is moving this one.

If you want the mechanics of how that arrangement actually works, we set it out separately in how a long term booth works.

Where this sits

On the retail side it belongs with our booths at Golden Gems in St. Louis, Criminal Records in Atlanta and Fred Segal Home in Malibu. A general store is a slightly different animal from any of those, because there is no single category driving the visit.

Around Los Angeles it joins Florentin downtown and The Gallery on West 3rd. Whittier is the first room we have published out this side of the county, and Uptown is exactly the kind of street these work on: independent shops, people walking the whole strip, nobody in a hurry.

Want one in your shop?

We design and build custom photo booths for the room they are going into and install them through our Venue Placement program, with maintenance handled by us. We also run brand activations nationwide.

Tell us about your space and what is already in it. The palette usually comes from the room.
